Honored Citizen is our reduced fare for seniors age 65+, people on Medicare, people with disabilities, people who qualify based on income, veterans and active-duty military.
Welcome aboard! Honored Citizen riders pay half the price of an Adult 2½-hour fare and less than one-third the price of an Adult 1-Month Pass. Proof of eligibility is required when boarding.

How to buy and use the Honored Citizen fare
Seniors 65+ and people on Medicare
If you’re age 65 or older or on Medicare, you qualify to use TriMet’s reduced Honored Citizen fare. You don’t need to apply in advance to use the reduced fare. Just keep your government-issued photo ID with proof of age or Medicare card handy when boarding in case a bus operator or fare inspector asks to see proof of eligibility.
- Pay with cash on the bus
- Buy a ticket from the ticket machine at the MAX or WES station
- Buy a Hop card at the grocery store (in advance)
- Add a virtual Hop card on your phone (in advance)
People with disabilities
If you have a verifiable mental or physical disability, you qualify to use TriMet’s reduced Honored Citizen fare. However, you must apply for and receive a personalized photo ID Hop card before using the reduced fare. Simply load money on your card, then tap it on the green Hop reader each time you board.
People with qualifying incomes
If you’re enrolled in Oregon Health Plan, SNAP or TANF, or if you meet the income requirements, you qualify to use TriMet’s reduced Honored Citizen fare. However, you must apply for and receive a personalized photo ID Hop card before using the reduced fare. Simply load money on your card, then tap it on the green Hop reader each time you board.
Veterans, active-duty military and reservists
If you’re a veteran, active-duty member of the military or reservist, you qualify to use TriMet’s reduced Honored Citizen fare. However, you must apply for and receive a personalized photo ID Hop card before using the reduced fare. Simply load money on your card, then tap it on the green Hop reader each time you board.
